L o n d o n, U n i t e d   K i n g d o m ,

*********************************************************
Pronunciation
 *********************************************************

Vowels are pronounced as follows:

a - ah

e - eh

i - ee

o - oh

u - ooh

r - l

Usually each syllable in a word is pronounced with the same emphasis. The 'R' sound is usually rolled and sounds very close to an 'L'. Trailing 'U's' are often silent as in Roku or Kudsurogu which are pronounced Rok and Kudsurog.

You will also find variations occuring in spelling (for example tsuki and zuki). This is due to changes in the translation occuring over time. This list was compiled from many sources and experiences over many years. Likewise you may see the words run together in some sources, hyphenated in others, or separated. From certain sources you will also see names reversed as in "Kenwa Mabuni" in western sources and (correctly) "Mabuni Kenwa" in Japanese sources. Likewise with titles where strict usage would be "Thawait Sensei".

You will also encounter "western" Japanese expressions where the terms have been constructed without full understanding of the language (for example "Dai Sensei", which really doesn't mean "Grand Master"). However I have included such terms for completeness as you will encounter such terms from time to time.

... and finally my apologies for any mistakes. If you can add to, or correct anything that you find here, please let me know.
